Where do Sandwiches Come From?

The sandwich, surprisingly enough, has been around for more than 2000 years. It didn't get its name, though, until 1762 when the 4th Earl of Sandwich, John Montagu, got hungry during a game of poker. Not wanting to put down his cards to eat, he asked his cook to come up with something that would allow him to keep playing while eating. So the cook took some slices of roast beef and placed them between two pieces of toast. The Earl was then able to eat his meal with one hand and keep holding his card with the other. Because of this story, the Earl's name was given to the concoction.
